Late Winter Wellness Self Care and Herbs

2/24/2023

February and March here in the northeast are challenging in different ways than December and January are. And now with the extremes and unexpected sudden shifts it is even harder.

Why we get sick in late winter

Our immunity, our protective shield and our internal strength and fire are somewhat exhausted from dealing with winter weather, indoor heating, a variety of winter illnesses and the lack of time outdoors in fresh air and sun.

Immune System Remedies

Here are some ideas for boosting our vitality and staying healthy, free from coughs colds and anything bigger that is passed around, especially now that people are masking less, washing hands less or sanitizing and are back to up close and personal socializing.
Lifestyle
Tried and true, more sleep, hydration and lots of vegetables of course. But you can add in ACES + Zinc supplement to support the immune system.
Vitamin D & Sunshine
Taking Vitamin D3 especially with K2 to help the body use it is good but it is important to know what your levels are (a simple blood draw will tell you). You can take too much Vit D as well as not enough so its best to find out how much your body actually has/ The standard rule of thumb is be above 40 is enough but between for 40 and 60 is great so you could supplement but at a lower dose than if your level is 20.

Herbs for winter

Immune Support
As for herbs, At the first hint of a cold, my favorite is Echinacea combined with Andrographis. They synergize well and seem to give very broad action.

Herbs for Lung Health
If you tend to get lung issues if exposed, then using a formula or even single herbs to support the energy and tissues of the lungs is a thing at this time while the weather swings from spring like to slushy winter storm and back again. All that dry indoor air hasn't helped out lungs or nasal passages or throats either.
Our Lung Tonic is formulated with Mullein, Elecampane, Cordyceps, Codonopsis Thyme and Licorice. These demulcent, tonifying, strengthening herbs keep the lungs happy and healthy.
Herbs for Low Energy
If you get a bit run down or stressed, damp and cold, or just stagnant and low, try some American Ginseng, Ashwaganda, Eleuthero and Cordyceps, together or as singles.

Nervous System Support
There is nothing like the breath to keep us clear and strong, so take sometime for quieting the mind and breathing deep. If our nervous system is strong and centered then things within tend to flow better and our interactions in the world do too.
You may be someone who benefits from nervine herbs as a core fundamental health support. Try  these herbs as singles or in combination and see which ones are the best match for you unique self.
Here are a few of my allies that I've relied on over the years to calm, uplift, center and ground me.
Valerian, like a warm earthy quilt, St Johnswort  to lift the spirit and bring a smile, Skullcap  to calm a racing or over full mind, California Poppy
or Kava Kava, to ease pain, relax muscles, easy does it for the mind. Try our People Calmer formula with six herbs to help us shift our energy and get us quietly back to ourselves.

Find Your Herbal Allies
There are many, many more options. The herb world is vast and has as much variety as there are flowers, people and insects. In fact there is something for everyone. Don't be afraid to try different herbs and combinations of them until you find what feels right.
Take Care and Be Well.
